Tips for Aging in a Healthy Way

Published on September 13th, 2019

September is Healthy Aging Month, making it the perfect time to turn your attention back onto your health after a summer of a few too many cheat meals. Aging in a healthy way is easiest when you are taking care of your body both mentally and physically. Try a new fitness class near Wayne, NJ, read a book you’ve always wanted to read or spend time with those who make you happy. There are plenty of ways to age in a healthy way, such as the following:

Reduce Stress

Our stressors change as we get older, but it is how we respond to these stressors that define us. Did you know that long-term stress can negatively impact your brain cells and lead to depression? Make sure that you are taking measures to reduce stress however you can. Whether it be going for a walk, doing yoga, spending time with friends and family, or getting more sleep, keeping stress at bay is important regardless of your age.

Exercise & Eat Well

It goes without saying that eating healthy foods and exercising often is an integral part of aging in a healthy way. However, make sure to listen to your body and don’t take things to an extreme. If you’re sore, take a rest day. If you’ve been eating healthy all week, it’s okay to splurge on some ice cream. It’s all about balance!.

Cultivate Meaningful Relationships

Roughly 29 percent of older adults live alone, which could be grounds for loneliness and social isolation. Make sure to put effort into relationships that are meaningful to you. You can also reach out to old friends who you may think are lonely now to see how they are doing.

Aging doesn’t have to be a negative part of life! Embrace it and make the most of it not only in September but year-round as well.
